The Power of Social Media
Social media has definitely taken over the millennial culture in the past ten or so years. You must be living under a rock if you have not heard about Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Millions of people scroll through them every day for communication, entertainment, or even for business. Being on the Internet has become a way of life in recent times, but how exactly did it start?
Before the advent of Facebook, there was Six Degrees. Founded in 1997 with basically the same premise as Facebook, where users created their profiles online and befriended people, Six Degrees technically started the whole concept of online social network. Then came MySpace in the early 2000s, which was not only popular to individuals making friends, but also to musicians wanting to promote their music. Up until today, MySpace has become a huge avenue for budding singers and artists to upload their music and be heard by the public, including record labels and producers. Several famous contemporary singers actually started and went big on the site including Colbie Calliat, Panic! At The Disco, Owl City, and Katy Perry. The website Friendster was also big during those times, but eventually closed down and relaunched as a gaming site in 2009. Instant messaging sites like Yahoo! Messenger and blog sites such as Blogger and WordPress were also big names on the Internet in the early 2000s. LinkedIn, which was founded in 2002, is a specialized form of social media, as it particularly caters to professional networks. Lots of businesspeople and headhunters still use LinkedIn largely for expanding their networks and looking for professional profiles for their jobs and businesses.
In 2004, Facebook was founded and since then has become the largest social media site. Initially targeted particularly for Harvard students, its founder Mark Zuckerberg eventually launched the site to the general public, and everything else is history. In 2006, a social media site that allows shorter, one liner status updates called Twitter became huge. Currently, Facebook has over a billion users, while Twiter has over 500 millions accounts on record.
Other social media sites also garnered recognition from users such as Tumblr, Flickr, Photobucket, Instagram, and Youtube.
Currently, social media platforms are not only for communication, but they are largely used also for business and marketing. These sites are being used to promote products, increase website visibility, endorse services, and even share news and updates. Social networks have definitely impacted our daily lives in more ways than one, and while its future is unknown, it sure is here to stay for long.
